Cambodia: Tuol Sleng

I thought this deserved it's own post.  In short, Tuol Sleng, or S-21, was an elementary school turned into a prison/torture facility during the Khmer Rouge. Prisoners were brought here, tortured for 2-4 months, then taken to the Killing Fields.  t's pretty sickening to walk through here and see the awful things that people did to each other.  I can't fathom how something so terrible could happen on such a large scale for so many years.

Building "A"

Graves of the last 14 (of 17,000-20,000) victims that were killed as the KR fled.

"Rules" for being tortured

Interrogation room- these windows have glass to muffle the sounds of the prisoner's screams.

Some of the classrooms still have slate chalk boards.  There are still some shadows of Khmer and French writing.

Gymnasium turned torture device

The buildings were wrapped with barbed wire so the prisoners couldn't commit suicide by jumping out from the top floors.

Brick cell.  Each cell is numbered.  Each room had numbers written in a different style/color.  Someone thought about that when marking the layout of the cells...

Room of brick cells

More enclosed wooden cells

Looking into a wood cell.  There were 2.5  ft. wide x 4-5 ft. deep.

S-21 school

Kids playing (I think they were supposed to be sweeping).
